Happy birthday, FNM (Za)Upanje!
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Mahatma Gandhi
June 13, 2025 marks one year since the founding FND Za)Upanje Slovenia—a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness, disseminating knowledge, and promoting progress in the field of functional neurological disorders (FND).
Although the achievements in the video may look simple, they are in fact the result of countless hours of work. Building a non-profit organisation from scratch - especially in a field that is so complex, stigmatised and often overlooked - is by no means easy.
Every step was well thought out: from writing and designing more than 200 educational contents in three languages, to setting up collaborations, replying to every message, organising events, planning projects and managing the minimal financial resources down to the last euro.
It is easy to see the turning points, but it is harder to understand the perseverance, energy and commitment behind them - especially without permanent staff or guaranteed funding. So it is with great pride that we celebrate our first anniversary and look forward to new achievements and projects on the horizon!
Happy first year - and many thanks to all of you who made it happen. 🐝
Who are we and what are we trying to achieve?
FND Za)Upanje Slovenia, the Association for Functional Neurological Disorders, is the first and currently the only association in Slovenia for people with functional neurological disorders. Our goal is to create a community consisting of patients with FND, their family members, professionals in the fields of neurology, psychology, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, as well as anyone else interested in functional neurological disorders.
We are working hard:
To bring together people with FND Slovenia.
To establish a professional community with the aim of educating and creating better treatment conditions for people with FND.
To improve the quality of life for people with FND reduce stigma.
Organize events , roundtables, and charity drives to help provide better care for patients and enable professionals in this field to participate in additional professional training abroad.

The symbolism of the bee
The story of the bee, as the symbol of the Association FNM (Za)Upanje Slovenija, has a personal yet universal meaning. Bees are strongly linked to Slovenia's cultural heritage and symbolise teamwork, wisdom, hard work and remind us to find a balance between work and rest.
The example of the bee is also evident in the treatment of functional neurological disorders, where a multidisciplinary approach, the comprehensive and constantly evolving expertise of specialists, the diligence of patients, and patience on the path to their recovery are all crucial. We hope that the little bee will help us fly into a new era of functional neurological disorders in the Slovenian context.
