Who are we and what are we trying to achieve?

FNM (Za)Upanje Slovenija, the Association for Functional Neurological Disorders, is the first and currently the only association in Slovenia for people with functional neurological disorders. Our aim is to create a community consisting of patients with FND, their family members, professionals from the fields of neurology, psychology, physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy and everyone else interested in functional neurological disorder.

We are working hard:

  • To bring together patients with functional neurological disorders in Slovenia.

  • To build a professional community to educate and create better treatment conditions for patients with functional neurological disorders.

  • To improve patients quality of life and reduce stigma

  • To organise events, roundtables, charity campaigns to improve patient care, and additional training abroad for professionals in the field. In addition to the above, donations collected will be used for research purposes.

What is FND?

A functional neurological disorder(FND) is a collection of signs and symptoms that refer to genuinely experienced changes in motor, sensory or cognitive functioning. The main pathophysiological processes involve altered functioning of brain networks and do not refer to damage to brain structures but to malfunctioning of the central nervous system. FND is the result of a complex combination of the influence of biological, psychological and social factors on the brain.

FND symptoms

Functional neurological disorder is a supersense for a number of symptoms that are apparently neurological in origin, but are difficult to explain in psychological or organic terms by current models. FND symptoms are similar to those of some other neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Multiple Sclerosis. As the symptoms do not have an organic origin, practitioners often assume that patients control some or all of their symptoms. This is a misconception as patients do not consciously produce functional symptoms.

The symbolism of the bee

The story of the bee, as the symbol of the Association FNM (Za)Upanje Slovenija, has a personal yet universal meaning. Bees are strongly linked to Slovenia's cultural heritage and symbolise teamwork, wisdom, hard work and remind us to find a balance between work and rest.

The example of the bee is also seen in the treatment of functional neurological disorders, where multidisciplinary treatment, the complex and constantly evolving knowledge of specialists, the diligence of patients and patience on the road to their cure are key. We hope that the bee will help us fly into a new era of functional neurological disorders in the Slovenian environment.
